Who We Are
Mount Olympus Presbyterian Church (PC-USA)
Beyond a very gifted and capable staff, our church is led by:
- Our session of elders who have responsibility for the mission and government of our church.
- Our board of deacons who minister to those in need, to the sick, and any who may be facing difficult times in their lives.
Our standard for leadership is the example of the Lord Jesus Christ, who came “not to be served but to serve.” (Matt. 20:28)
Phil is a native of the Bay Area, and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary. He loves being a parent, with his wife Nancy, to his three daughters. Phil digs jazz music, cooking and food, and the Oakland Raiders.
Jeff Silliman served as pastor of MOPC for 26 years. During his ministry, membership and attendance grew, the building was expanded twice, and this church strengthened in spiritual vitality.
He is now retired, and still lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, Connie.
Sheila was raised in Salt Lake City, graduating from Olympus High School and the University of Utah. She is married to her high school sweetheart, Stephen, and they have 3 fantastic daughters, ranging in age from 11 to 21. Her family keeps her busy (on any given weekend you might find them all at Lagoon) and in her spare time she enjoys reading.
Emily came to Utah from California in 2004, met and married Bob in 2005, and began attending MOPC in 2006. Emily loves hiking, camping, concerts at Red Butte Garden, Prairie Home Companion, Farmers Markets, and visiting her daughter’s family in Portland, Oregon.
Director of Youth Ministry
Jamie and Dave White have three children, Blake, Chaseand Mila, and spend most of their time playing outside, building legos, and creating forts in their living room. Other than her love for her family and youth ministry, give her some chocolate, a cup of coffee, and a good book and she’s set.
Director of Children's Ministry
Ruth grew up in Chambersburg, Pa, the only major northern community burned down by the Confederates during the Civil War. Because of the town she grew up in, she appreciates history and finds our nation’s history particularly fascinating. She has a passion for music, especially opera. She graduated from the University of Utah and enjoys spending time with her adorable hubby of 16 years and their two children. They are a busy young family who enjoys camping, traveling, and just hanging out together!
The Mount Director and Assistant to the Youth Minister
Matt is a big supporter of YoungLife and was on staff for 6 years. He is married to his wife Bre, together they love hiking, art, camping and doing everything with their 2 dogs. When he isn’t fly-fishing or in a coffee shop he is reading books.
Director of Mount Olympus Child Development Center
Julie grew up on a small farm in West Jordan, Utah. She is one of 14 children in a blended family. She is married with two adult sons, eight foster children and several wolfs. Julie's hobbies are sugar art, cake decorating, and motor cycles (she once rebuilt a Harley in her kitchen). She has worked in the childcare field for 34 years and loves serving children and families.
John & Lauren Mehlhoff
Directors of Facilities
John and Lauren both graduated from the University of South Dakota where they met. With business and advertising degrees in hand, they turned their attention to the cleaning world. John started and ran a mobile truck wash company for twenty years, while Lauren received her tidying training from years of picking up after two active kids (and now grandkids). They care for the church building and grounds, always looking for ways to make the space more welcoming, fresh, and free from distractions. You’ll see them around often, but look out! John is always armed with a new joke for unsuspecting visitors.
11 A.M. Worship Director
Jason is the worship and music leader at our 11 a.m. worship service, and occasionally at The Mount. He is also the Youth Director at Mountain View Methodist Church.
Bonnie started piano at about 4 years old. She added organ lessons as a teenager. As an accompanist in church music, her goal is to assist the congregation to not just sing musically, but to worship and praise God in song.
Emily Williams received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Utah in 2001. After teaching choral music for four years, she returned to the University of Utah to pursue a Master of Music degree in collaborative piano (2008).
Ms. Williams is a vocal coach and piano instructor at Westminster College as well as an accompanist for the Westminster Chamber Singers, Chorale, and the Opera Studio. She also works as an accompanist and coach for several voice studios at the University of Utah.
As an accompanist, Emily spends her summers in Italy with La Musica Lirica, a summer opera program for young American performers. She has and continues to work with Utah Symphony and Opera and also does freelance and répétiteur work throughout the Wasatch Front.
